Maffiosi as an Android app: full-screen play without the browser bar

Maffiosi can now be installed as an Android app. Full screen, with its own icon among your other apps, and without the address bar that always eats into your screen in a browser. What the app does not do is perhaps more interesting: it contains no copy of the game.

Why an app alongside the browser

Maffiosi remains a browser game and that is not changing. You log in on any computer or phone and pick up where you left off. But on a phone, a browser permanently costs you a strip of screen for the address bar and controls - and that is exactly where people play: on the move, in between things, in short sessions.

The app removes that strip. You get the full height of your screen, the game sits among your other apps instead of buried in a tab, and it opens with a single tap.

Not a second version of the game

The app is a Trusted Web Activity. In plain terms: it opens maffiosi.com in the browser engine already on your phone, but without a browser window around it. There is no game logic inside the app.

That has a welcome side effect. When we ship a new feature - a new crime, a balance change, a fix - you have it immediately. There is no app update, no tens of megabytes to download, and the app can never lag behind the website. Players in the app and players in a browser are always in exactly the same game.

The app itself is correspondingly small: under one megabyte.

Your account and session

Because the app uses the same browser engine, everything keeps working as you are used to: you stay logged in, notifications come through, and nothing needs setting up again. There is no separate app account.

Installing

The app comes directly from us rather than the Play Store. Android will therefore warn you once that you are installing from an unknown source - this is normal for apps from outside the Store, and you only need to allow it once.

• Go to the download page and tap Download for Android.
• Open the downloaded file and grant permission to install, once.
• Confirm. Maffiosi then sits alongside your other apps.

The download page also shows a checksum (SHA-256) of the file, so you can verify for yourself that you downloaded the original app and not a modified copy from elsewhere.

Will it run on my device?

The app works from Android 5.0 and is tested through Android 14. That covers virtually every device sold in the past ten years.

On an iPhone there is no APK, but there is a good alternative: add Maffiosi to your home screen from Safari. You get the same full-screen result with its own icon.

Does the browser still work?

Yes. The app is an extra way to play, not a replacement. Many players will use the app on their phone and the browser on a computer - same account, same family, same progress.
